FAQs
UKNN Libraries
What is the UK Nappy Network?
We are a collection of nappy hire services based around the UK. Most of the libraries in the network are staffed by knowledgable volunteers; we may be nappy enthusiasts but we often combine library work with other jobs, so please be patient when contacting one!
Where can I find my nearest nappy library?
We have a map of all our network nappy libraries, which you can find here
How can I set up my own nappy library?
Guidelines for setting up your own nappy library can be found here.
How can I donate nappies to nappy libraries?
You can donate nappies in our dedicated Facebook group. For more information about how donations will be used, or to find out about other donations (time/skills/money) please see here (link needs updating ?paypal for donations?).
Washing Nappies
How do I wash my cloth nappies?
You can view and download our simple guide to washing cloth nappies here. For a more comprehensive guide or more specific details on washing including some troubleshooting tips, please see our Wash Guide pages
Do you recommend a particular detergent?
We recommend using a non-bio powder detergent in line with many manufacturers guidelines. Enzymes in bio detergent can cause deterioration of bamboo fibres in reusable nappies. We do not have a particular brand to suggest however!
Why do my nappies smell?
There are three main reasons why nappies will smell.
Too much detergent: this can lead to a build up on the fibres which then causes smells to get trapped. This is more common with microfibre based nappies and inserts but can happen to other types as well.
Not enough detergent: cloth nappies are likely to be the dirtiest thing you'll put in your machine (unless you do Mud Runners, then more power to you!). You will need to make sure that the amount of detergent you use is adjusted for soiling, machine capacity and hard or soft water.
Underloading the machine: this can cause inadequate agitation of the nappies, which may lead to them not being cleaned properly.
Your local nappy librarians will be able to help troubleshoot these issues, and many more besides!
Enviromental Q's
Is it actually better for the environment to use cloth?
The simple answer is YES! In 2023, DEFRA produced a life cycle assessment report that confirmed it. Using reusable nappies produces 25% less CO2 than single-use disposables. You can read more information about the report on the Nappy Alliance website, or view the full DEFRA report here.
Will using cloth nappies save me money?
It definitely can do. At UKNN, we would always recommend trying before buying by hiring a reusable nappy kit from one of our network of libraries.
